Wow, it’s been a long time since I posted.  We’ve been really busy.

On Halloween day we went to Mary Jo Peckham Park where we had a photographer friend of Kelly’s take some pictures to use as gifts for Christmas.  They came out pretty good.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving at my cousins’ house with lots of our family.  The food was really good and we got a good 4-generation photo of Garrett’s great-grandfather Erlin, his grandfather Ken, and me & him.

P1060515

… and lots of other good photos too.

We made another Thanksgiving stop at Peggy’s house for dinner.  The food there was awesome as well.

I got off work on December 18th and I don’t go back until January 4th.  Since it was Garrett’s first Christmas we put up the tree this year.  This 9’ tree is really hard to put up but it is worth it.

 16436_217724286600_562346600_3592471_6279773_n

Christmas was pretty hectic.  We had a couple of parties the weekend before Christmas.  Then on Christmas Eve we went to my mom’s and had lunch and exchanged gifts, then that night we had Kelly’s family over and dinner and exchanged gifts with them.  Then Christmas morning we went to my dad and step-mom’s house and had lunch and exchanged gifts with them and her family.  Then it was back to Kelly’s mom’s house for dinner and gift exchange with her brother & sister and kids.  Then back over to dad and step-mom’s house to play some games with her family.  It was a great time, but we’ve got to find a way to make fewer stops.  We did all of our shopping on December 23rd, which helped.

Garrett & Santa

Garrett is growing up fast.  We took him to his 6 month checkup on December 11th.  He weighed 16lbs. 10oz. and was 28.5” tall.  This puts him in the 40th percentile for weight and the 90th percentile for height.  That means that he is taller than 90"% of children his age but only heavier than 40%.  Basically he is tall and lean.  But you wouldn’t think it by looking at his chubby cheeks.  My dad is 6’1” and Kelly’s dad was 6’ and her grandpa was 6’4” so Garrett might turn out to be a really tall guy.  I’ll have to go back to learning more Hapkido if he stay’s on that track.

He’s scooting around pretty good and he seems anxious to stand up.  He’s also started eating solid food.  Last week was rice cereal, this week is oatmeal cereal and next week we start on yellow and orange vegetables.

Kelly and I love Halloween because it gives us an excuse to dress up and act even more foolish than usual.  This year we went with the ‘70’s disco theme.  Kelly’s friend Hollie went as Amy Winehouse and my friend Eric went as Burger King Arthur.

We stopped off at some friends’ house that were having a toga party and then went to Mo’s where we met up with some other friends.  This year was cool because Halloween fell on a Saturday and the clocks were set back because of Daylight Savings Time.  We drank and danced the night away.

Solar Concentrator (Part 1)

Project

Construct a solar concentrator

Primary Objective

Through various experiments, demonstrate the viability of a personal solar concentrator to produce energy through various techniques

Secondary Objective

Have fun catching stuff on fire using a backyard death ray.

Background

Originally I saw an episode of MythBusters called “Archimedes Death Ray” where they were testing the ancient myth of a large array of mirrors used to concentrate sunlight to set fire to the tar on invading ships.  They busted the myth but it made me want to try it too.

I stumbled across some blogs and videos about constructing a personal solar concentrator.  The difference between a solar concentrator and a solar collector is the collector is just an array of solar cells laid flat to collect sunlight, while the solar concentrator is a concave reflective surface that reflects light across a large surface into a small focal point.  It looked like a fun project that required minimal supplies.  Also, all the pictures and video I saw were weak.  Most were either using aluminum foil (sometimes the dull side of the foil?!), small dishes, large mirrors, inefficient mirror patterns, prime focus, or they didn’t take it a step beyond catching stuff on fire to actually producing some usable energy.  I thought I could better.

It also brought back childhood memories of frying ants with a magnifying glass on a hot summer day.  It also brought back good memories of high school physics projects with my friend Nathan.  We built boats out of cardboard big enough to hold us and paddle around the school’s swimming pool to demonstrate buoyancy and built an 8 foot tall hot air balloon out of nothing but tissue paper and rubber cement.

Safety Precautions:

None

Step 1 - Gather Materials

I sent my partner-in-crime, Nathan, the links to the blogs and videos and he like the idea of the project.  Nathan used to install satellite dishes a long time ago and had a lot of left over dishes in storage.

We knew we wanted the smallest mirrors we could find so we could maximize the surface area of whatever dish we found.  Nathan went online and found a place to order 1” square mirrors. They were $10 for 80 so he bought 240 thinking that would be about right to fill up a 15” dish.

Nathan then visited his storage area and gathered up several dishes ranging in size from 15”, like you see on most people’s home today, all the way up to a 53”x49” old PrimeStar dish. We decided that there was no reason to start out small and went with the PrimeStar dish. Apart from its size, this dish was the best because it was lightweight fiberglass and had an offset focus. This means that it’s shape is not a semi-sphere where the focal point would be directly over the center of the dish and it has to be pointed directly at the sun. Rather, this dish is a specially designed semi-ellipsoid whose focal point is off to one side and it stands upright and only slightly tilted. This is good for two reasons. First, whatever we place at the focal point wouldn’t block any of the mirrors and secondly if we were going to be burning stuff then we didn’t want to make a mess over the top of the mirrors. This particular dish also had a nice bracket where the focal point was to hold the LNB that could be adapted to hold whatever we want.

We didn’t have enough mirrors to cover the whole dish but at least we could start out with a parabola across the center. The surface area of a flat ellipse is (Pi * L * W ) / 4. That come out to 2040 mirrors! It would be even more for the interior of an elliptical dish. With 240 1” square mirrors we had only 12% of the mirrors we needed if we wanted to cover the entire dish.

We also did some research on collimator lenses, magnifying lens, Peltier coolers, small steam engines, etc. We also picked up a Peltier cooler and a solar cell from a local electronic parts outlet to play around with.

Step 2 – Attach the Mirrors to the Dish

We toyed around with several options for attaching the mirrors to the dish. One concern we had was if we weren’t happy with the results we wanted to be able to salvage the mirrors. We decided that concern wasn’t that important and went ahead and started attaching the mirrors with superglue. We couldn’t figure out why some of the people in the videos we’d seen wanted to arrange the mirrors in concentric circles. We thought this was a poor design because you lose a lot of surface area between the mirrors, and it’s not about making a pretty pattern but covering the maximum surface area of the dish with mirrors.

We washed all the gunk that had collected on the dish from it being stored outside and attached a row of 40 mirrors across the middle. It wasn’t perfectly aligned with the edges of the dish, but again, it doesn’t matter if they are straight across or diagonal, as long as you cover the entire thing. It was about 5:00 in the evening and the sun was still out so we rolled the dish into the driveway and pointed it at the sun. The focal point was pretty good with only a little variance around the edges. You could clearly make out a 1” square focal point. We didn’t take any measurements, but the early results looked promising so we pressed on.

We put the other 200 mirrors we had on the dish. It came out to 6 rows of 40 with a couple of mirrors offset for the mount bolt holes. By then the sun was down so we couldn’t test it, but there happened to be a full moon that night and clear skies so we were actually able to get some heat from of the sunlight reflected off the moon and focused on our hands!

The next day was sunny, so we did this test:

More to come when I get around to ordering more mirrors.

If I asked anybody reading this what I did for a living, they'd probably say, "I dunno... something with computers?" Well here is a very good case study that Microsoft did on Loomis that answers the question:

I'm the Software Development Manager for the SafePoint product mentioned in the video. That means that my team and I are responsible for all the software that is written for the SafePoint product. Robert Johnson is the Director of eBusines and my boss, and Wayne Sadin (the one doing most of the talking) is the CIO, who is Robert's boss.

The entire video was filmed at our corporate offices here in Houston. The complete case study is available here.

Wow, it’s been a busy few weeks.

We were having trouble with Garrett sleeping through the night.  We were doing everything we were supposed to.  We were consistent in our routine, relaxed him with a warm bath, kept the lights dim and noises low, and read bedtime stories or sang lullabies.  None of this was working. Every night we would put him down around 9pm and he’s always get up around 3am.  But when he’d spend the night with grandparents he’d always sleep through the night.  All the grandparent’s houses are warmer than ours by several degrees so we closed the AC vents in the nursery and doubled up on the blankets in his crib.  We found Enfamil RestFull which digest slowly so he doesn’t wake up hungry.  We switched him to that at night and I’m happy to say that for the last few weeks he’s sleeping all night.  He goes to sleep around 9pm now and sleeps until about 7am.  Mommy & Daddy don’t have bags under their eyes anymore!

Friday we went to the doctor for Garrett’s 4-month checkup.  He weighs 15 lbs 4 oz (6.9kg) and he is 25 ¼” (64 cm) long.  She said that physically and developmentally he is doing great.  He drinks about 4-6 oz at a time and about 30-40 oz a day. He has a very mild case of Cradle Cap which is a crusty skin rash on his scalp.  He had to get more vaccination shots which he didn’t care for at all but got over quickly.  The doctor said he wouldn’t be ready for solid food for another 2 months.  We go again for his 6-month checkup the second week of December.

He can roll over from his back to his front and from his front to back and he can hold his head up on his own.  A couple of weeks ago he started to reach for things and grab them and hold on to them or, more likely, put them in his mouth.  He has a couple of little stuffed animals and rattles and toys that he likes.  His favorite is Tigger.  He likes to suck on his tail.

He’s making a lot more noises now too.  He jabbers a lot and it sounds like he really has something to say.  Occasionally he’ll try to hold a sound as long as he can.  Like  “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,” until he runs out of breath.  Or he’ll try to see how high pitched of a squeak he can make.  Every now and then he’ll just let out an “EEEEK” real loud and then go back to what he was doing.  He giggles now too when you tickle him or give him smooches on the neck.

This guy LOVES his fingers. The first thing he does in the morning and the last thing every night (and most of the time in between) he is sucking on his fingers.  A lot of times he’s not really sucking on them though.  It’s more like he just puts them in his mouth in order to make drool.  He likes to try to get both fists in his mouth at the same time.  A couple of times he’ll stick them so far in his mouth, he’ll gag.  This skill combined with his new found voice makes for some interesting shows.

We’ve got some good videos that I want to post but I recently upgraded our computer to Windows 7 and my old video editing software isn’t compatible.  As soon as I find some new software I’ll get them posted.

I can’t wait to get home from work every day to see what he’s going to do next.

For the first week after we put Garrett in the nursery he slept pretty good.  Since then he’s had a hard time staying asleep.  His being in the nursery has been harder on us than it has been on him.  The baby monitor we got is pretty cool. It has a night vision camera on it so after we put him to bed Kelly and I lay in our bed and watch him sleep on the monitor.  It's our new favorite TV show.

This past week Kelly got sick. She went to the doctor and they told her that she had a double ear infection and a throat infection. She had the exact same thing last year around this time. They prescribed some antibiotics.  I worked from home for a couple of days so I could take care of Garrett.   Then I started to get sick too, but I took some of Kelly's antibiotics to nip it in the bud.

Grandma & Grandpa rescued him from us on Friday and kept him through the weekend so he wouldn't get sick. We missed him so much while he was gone. It was nice to rest for a couple of days but we were really glad to have him back home.

We had tickets to the Nickleback concert for Saturday but we were too sick to go. We tried to sell the tickets but couldn't find anyone to buy them. At the last minute we were able to give them away so they wouldn't go to waste. It rained and it was muddy, but we heard it was an awesome show. Bummer.

A couple of weeks ago Kelly and I went to the Depeche Mode concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. We missed them last time they came to town and really regretted it so we vowed not to miss them again.

We had lawn seats and the show was sold out. There was a sea of people. It was propably one of the best concerts I've ever been to. They played a good mix from their entire discography. The setlist was:

In Chains
Wrong
Hole To Feed
Walking In My Shoes
It's No Good
A Question Of Time
Precious
Fly On The Windscreen
Little Soul
Home
Miles Away / The Truth Is
Policy Of Truth
In Your Room
I Feel You
Enjoy The Silence
Never Let Me Down Again

Encore #1
A Question Of Lust
Stripped
Behind The Wheel

Encore #2
Personal Jesus
Waiting For The Night (Bare Version)

For few old guys, they can still put on a really good show. I wore my concert shirt from when they were here in 1994.

We’ve started a pretty good routine with Garrett.  Or he’s started a good routine with us, depending on how you look at it.  He wakes up every day around 7:30am and has breakfast.  Then he naps and eats off and on until about 2:30pm.  Then he’s pretty much up all evening until around 9 or 10 pm.  Then we feed him, give him a bath and I read him a story, top him off and he goes to sleep.  If we stick to this he sleeps a lot longer.  One time he slept for 9.5 hours and a few times he’s slept for 7+ hours.  If we get off the routine  though, he only sleeps for about 4 hours.

He’s a lot more alert and attentive now.  He smiles at everything.  He watches some kids shows and likes all the bright colors.  There’s a show on HBO called Classical Baby that he loves.

I sent the last payment in on the Murano.  This is the first time I’ve bought a car new and paid it off.  What a relief!  For the next couple of months I’m going to use the money I would have spent on the note to fix a few things on it.  The right mirror is busted, one of the speakers cuts in and out, the mirror controls don’t work, and there are some scrapes on the left rear fender and both bumpers.  I’ve had it 5 years and it has ~67K miles.  I love it.  I’m seriously considering the same model for my next car.

We took Garrett to his 2 month checkup today. He weighed in at a whopping 12 lbs 7 ozs and is 23" inches long or tall depending on how you look at it. The doctor said that developmentally he is on-track and physically he's perfect. He had to get four vaccinations today. Three of them were shots in his legs and one of them was oral. The needles for the shots were not little baby needles either. They were big Capri-Sun-straw needles. He cried for a little bit, but, I was surprised that by the time we put him in the car seat to leave he was fine.

They have the best ceviche in town.  Afterwards Eric took us to Cecil’s Tavern to have a few pints.

Saturday Grandma & Grandpa kept Garrett overnight while Kelly and I went to Wayne’s 30th birthday pool party.  Then I came home and Kelly went with some friends to Mo’s.

On Sunday we went to lunch at another one of our favorite restaurants, Wild Wing Cafe and then picked up Garrett.

6 Weeks Old

On Wednesday, Garrett turned 6 weeks old.

A co-worker of mine asked me the popular question, “how much sleep are you getting?”  I gave him a sleepy grunt.  He recommended a book called “On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant The Gift Of Nighttime Sleep.”  And touted that by following the instructions in this book from day one he was able to get his baby to sleep through the night at two months old.  Obviously I was interested so he lent me the book.  I began reading it and it seemed to have some answers about feeding and sleep.

Then in another really good book we got from the obstetrician called “Baby 411,” it rates different sleep techniques.  The Babywise method was rated an “F”.  It went on to say that the “American Academy of Pediatrics issued an alert regarding their concerns with this book.”

Wow, we’ve got to be careful where we get our advice from.

Also Garrett hadn’t pooped in a day. Since almost every diaper we changed was dirty, we were concerned that he may be constipated.  We looked it up in “Baby 411,” and it said that at around 6 weeks a baby’s bowels slow down and they may only poop once every 24 hours and be prepared for “The Mother Load.”  Which we experience every day now.

A few people have also recommended that we try adding  a little rice cereal mixed in with his formula to help him sleep through the night.  We tried this and it didn’t have any effect on him.  We looked that up in the “Baby 411” too and it says that’s an old wives tale.  This book has been really helpful.

The Happiest Baby on the Block

A friend of ours lent us The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD.  This is a pretty good video about calming your baby down.  In the video they talk about treating the first 3 months of life as the “4th Trimester” where the baby is really still just a fetus.  And if you do things that remind them when they were in the uterus, its calming because they are accustomed to it.  In the video he teaches the 5 “S’s” of calming your baby down.  They are swaddling, placing them on their side, shushing or white noise, letting them suck a pacifier, and gently shaking them to mimic the normal movements in the womb.  With the right technique you can take a screaming baby to calm baby in a few seconds.  Garrett’s already pretty calm but some of the techniques have been useful.

Garrett turned one month old on Friday.  He’s able to focus on our faces and smiles sometimes.

He can even roll over from his tummy to his back.  The first time I thought it was an accident.  The second time I thought it was a coincidence.  But when he did it 3 times this week, I think he actually knows what he’s doing.  He sleeps between 3 to 4 hours at a time.  A couple of time he’s slept for 5 hours.

We like taking pictures.  We probably have over 400 pictures of him already.

I look a little tired in this picture.

Garrett now weighs 9 lbs. 9 oz. and is 22 1/4” long so he’s grown 2 inches and gained almost 2 lbs since birth.  His eye is much better but we still need to massage the tear duct a few times a day.  For his baby acne, she said it was most likely due to the oils from his hair and we should wash his face with Dove soap twice a day and start bathing him every day.  We started doing that and it’s already looking much better.  Other than that he has a perfect bill of health.  We were one day early to get his vaccinations so we’ll get them at his next appointment in a month.

Tuesday was Kelly's 32nd birthday.  After being pregnant, Kelly wasn’t feeling too pretty.  Even though I think she’s beautiful, I got her a facial, manicure and pedicure.

One of her favorite places she’s been wanted to for a while is Benihana.  They have an all you can eat special for $25. You can eat as much as you want from their entire menu.  The grandparents came over to our house to babysit Garrett and Roman & Jennifer, Robyn, Airen, & Stephanie went with out with us.   We had salad, onion soup, chicken fried rice, edamame, crunchy rolls (or as the waitress calls them cwonchy wolls), dragon rolls, denny’s roll, vegetable tempura, teriyaki beef & chicken, ebi (shrimp) , ikura (salmon), maguro (tuna), anago (eel), more cwonchy rolls, more soup, more salad, and for desert we had strawberry ice cream.  We had a really good time and Kelly had her first beer and sake in over 9 months. I’d say we got our moneys worth.

Back to Work

I went back to work last Thursday. Everyone asked how Garrett and Kelly were doing. The most popular question was, "Are you getting any sleep?" The first person I told "no" said, "yeah, the first three months are brutal." The next person I told "no" said, "yeah, the first six months are the worst." I expected the next person I told "no" to say, "yeah, they are pretty much a nightmare the first 12 years and then the next 12 years are pretty bad too." One guy said, "Actually the first few months are pretty easy, but then... just wait... you're going to ask yourself, 'what the hell was I thinking?'" Thanks for all the uplifting thoughts.

Kidding aside, I'm really lucky to work for a good company that values family so much. They are very lenient when it comes to leaving work for family stuff. I've been able to go with Kelly to every doctor appointment, and when I took off when Garrett was born my boss said, "take as much time as you need, because this only happens once per kid." Its made things much less stressful not having to worry about work this whole time.

But now I'm back to it, and we're starting to settle into a routine. These first couple of weeks at home have been amazing. We're exhausted, but its worth it.

Today was a long day. Garrett and Kelly both had their 2-week checkups.

On Sunday Garrett started getting eye boogers in his right eye. I looked it up online and since it wasn't red or bloodshot it was most likely a clogged tear duct. What I found said to clear it out with a warm washcloth. We called the doctor and she agreeded and called in some antibiotic drops to the pharmacy to cut the chance of infection.

Today at the doctor she told us we need to massage his tear ducts a few times a day until it clears up. Newborn's tear ducts are covered with a thin membrane that should go away, but sometimes it remains and causes tears to not drain out of the eye properly. Massaging the tear duct will loosen the membrane and he'll be fine.

They also had to prick his foot twice to take blood. It was a lot of blood and it took a long time. He screamed the whole time and it was really traumatic for all of us. Luckily this only has to happen once and he got over it pretty fast.

The doctor said everything else was fine with him and we go back to see her again in 2 weeks. At that visit he'll get a vaccination, but it won't be as bad at the blood samples today.

The sterile strips on Kelly's incision came off today before her appointment. The doctor said the incision looked good and everything was looking normal. He said she can do anything she wants now including exercise, driving, whatever... except sex. :( We go back and see him again in 2 weeks also. Kelly was glad to finally get out of the house and went to dinner with Peg.

Later today Garrett's umbilicus fell off. I've heard that some people put it a scrapbook like a lock of hair from the first haircut. I think that's gross. That would be like keeping toenail clippings or urine so it's going in the garbage.

We were all tired at the end of the day, even the puppy... who had no involvement whatsoever.

On Sunday, my mom came over and she brought a couple of my baby pictures with her. Check out how much Garrett looks like I did at his age.

Love the zebra print pillow too. Hey, it was 1974. Didn't everyone have a zebra print throw pillow?

Last time Abigail was groomed she had a few mats so we had to shave her completely. She looks dumb when she is completely shaved. Her hair was finally growing our a bit so yesterday I took her to PetSmart to get her groomed again.

There were are notes on our account to leave her eyelashes, because they cut them by default and I don't like them cut. Also, They still had notes on there from last time to shave her completely. I told the lady when I checked Abigail in that this time I wanted the standard Schnauzer cut, dropped Abigail off, and left.

About an hour later we received a call from a nervous teenager saying he'd accidentally shaved Abigail and that the $40 grooming would be free.

I guess she'll have to look a little goofy for a while, which is okay since its been so hot this summer.

Dr. Jackson recommended Dr. Pamela McGraw at Texas Childrens Pediatrics to be Garrett's pediatrician so we loaded him up...

... and took him to see her this morning. The doctor and all the nurses were very good. She examined him and told us:

  • He's sleep and eating schedules are good. When he was born he weighed 7 lbs 11.5 ozs. Before we left the hospital he weighed 7 lbs 3 ozs. Now he weighs 7lbs and 9 ozs. This is normal because babies loose a little weight after they are born then start gaining again. She said that by next week when we bring him back he should be over his birth weight.
  • His umbilicus looks fine and will probably fall off in the next week.
  • His circumcision looks fine and is healing nicely. We don't have to keep gauze on it anymore, but we should still keep petroleum jelly on it for a while. This is good because it will decrease our pit time.
  • He has a couple of places on him that look like dry skin. This is normal too and isn't really dry skin but the layer of skin that babies shed after they are born.
  • He shouldn't go to any public places for 4 to 6 weeks.
We go back to see her again next week and they will have to prick his heel and draw some blood for blood tests. Then we go again two weeks after that to get some vaccinations.
