Earlier this week one of the trees in out front yard was a temporary resting place for a swarm of bees.
Our next-door neighbor noticed a basketball sized ball of bees in our little oak tree and called us. I wasn’t home but Kelly told him that she would call someone to take care of it.
She called the fire department and they told her that they are just looking for a nest and will probably move on after an hour or two and advised her to stay inside until they’ve left. He added that after they left, we should check around the house to make sure they didn’t move to another nearby bush or tree. He went on to say that if they were still there after a couple of days then they were probably going to start a bee hive and that we should call someone to take care of them.
Kelly Googled “bee swarm” and confirmed the fireman’s story. Then our neighbor called us again about the bees to make sure Kelly was doing something about them. Kelly explained the situation to him and told him that she planned to wait for them to leave.
That should have been the end of it, but then he came over to our house. He just wanted Kelly to know, face-to-face, that his wife was allergic to bee stings and that they were uncomfortable with the bees being in our tree. Kelly, 9-months pregnant, dog on her him, told him, “well maybe she should stay inside until they leave.” I don’t think he was satisfied with the resolution, but he left anyway. I know he means well, but Kelly was far more annoyed by our over reactive neighbor than the swarm of bees.
Like a lot of nature, this was dangerous and cool at the same time. I wish we would have got a picture of them. I grabbed the photo above off Goggle Images.
